Following this, he took on the role of Electrical Engineer at One Alpha M&E Consultants Sdn Bhd for a year. From 2015 to 2024, Ir. Phoon worked as an Electrical Engineer and Senior Associate at KTA Tenaga Sdn Bhd.

Over the years, with continuing education program, he rose and took on roles in various departments such as Training Engineer in TNB Training Center ILSAS/UNITEN, Manager (Training and Development) in TNB Transmission HR department, Senior Engineer (Substation) in Transmission Engineering Department, Senior Manager in Asset Strategy and Development Department, Deputy Chief Engineer in Engineering Department of Transmission Division and Principal Engineer in the Grid Development Department, focusing on substation engineering design. Apart from power system engineering design and construction, his experience includes providing technical training to TNB staff and Asean utilities, being appointed as institution examiner to competency certifications within LLN/TNB and previous Electricity Supply Department of Malaysia.
